Music

Choir at St. Dunstan's

We gather for worship every Sunday to respond to God’s presence in our lives and in the world. Our worship is a lot like life: every time is different, yet much of it does not change – it’s joyful and sorrowful, contemplative and noisy, predictable and surprising.

Scripture, prayer, music and the Eucharist (Holy Communion) are a part of every Sunday morning service.

8:00 AM worship tends to be quiet and intimate, with traditional Western European hymns and liturgy.

The 10:00 AM service is more varied. Traditional sacred music from the past thousand years is the starting point for our worship, and on top we add pieces from other traditions up to the present day. Hymns may be led by organ, piano or other instruments, or simply sung without accompaniment. The choir, and sometimes the handbell choir or other instrumentalists, add their  praises. Whatever the style, music at St. Dunstan’s always speaks to both the heart and the mind.

St. Dunstan’s choir meets on Thursday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 and on Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 9:45 AM and sings at the 10:00 AM worship and special services throughout the school year. All singers are welcome, including those who are not completely comfortable with music reading. Improving skills while having fun and making a significant contribution to worship is part of the choir experience for every singer, regardless of experience.

Additionally, congregational members or guests often play instrumental solos or ensemble music during worship.

Handbell Choir

bell choirSt. Dunstan’s owns a 3-octave set of Schulmerich Handbells, and a 3-octave set of Schulmerich hand chimes. The handbell choir plays regularly during worship services and offers occasional performances during Lessons and Carols, St. Agnes Guild meetings, the Canterbury Faire and the Annual Ladies Tea.

The handbell choir is currently comprised of 11 dedicated ringers, with a variety of music backgrounds and knowledge. At this time, we have a full complement of ringers, but always welcome inquiries from others who are interested. Basic music reading skills are necessary. We have fun and work hard as we prepare beautiful music.

Our rehearsals are Sundays (usually 3 out of 4 each month) after church service, from 11:15 am-12:30 pm.

As our Sunday school has grown in numbers, there is now the opportunity to include hand chime instruction to our youth (no musical experience necessary).  This will be trialed in Fall 2017 to gauge interest, and for the possibility that our Sunday school participants might also be able to provide occasional music for worship services. All Sunday school youth would be very welcome.

Please come and experience worship and music at St. Dunstan’s!
