I heard a beautiful prayer today written by the great American author and theologian, Howard Thurman. I feel that this prayer speaks to where we are today as we anticipate the coming of Christmas in the middle of a pandemic shutdown.
Remember that Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8) And then, confidently read and pray Howard Thurman’s beautiful words:
God is here for us, with us and among us.
As we connect with each other,
care for one another, and
pray for one another this Christmas,
as we worship and sing from our homes,
making the most of our online services,
as we call a friend or loved one by phone or
connect by video chat or zoom,
God is present. God is with us.
Lord, Lord, Open unto me.
Open unto me and give me the assurance of your love and presence,
that I may give in turn that assurance to all whom I love.
Amen.
With love,
