If you would like an opportunity to make a difference in Shoreline, come volunteer with us! No religious affiliation or prior experience is needed. You can come one time, or every week, and stay all day, or just roll up your sleeves for an hour or two. We give each new volunteer an orientation to our program and partner them with someone who can show them how to do the work.
What We Do:
We provide homemade hot meals and serve them buffet style. These meals are free to anyone who wants them and are made from mostly donated food gleaned from local Shoreline retailers. Dinner doors open at 5pm.
In addition, we pack up the same meal, along with various other supplies needed by camp residents, and deliver them to Tent City 3, Tent City 5 and Camp United We Stand. The camps we serve are all legal camps sanctioned by the city and have a code of conduct for residents. The items are loaded onto our volunteer’s vehicles in a catering box called a Cambro and driven to the camp’s location for delivery.
Volunteer Positions include:
Glean Team, Tuesdays
Meet at the Church and caravan to our local retail partners to pick up donations. You can use your own vehicle or drive with one of us. We are usually done with this activity by noon or earlier. Some lifting is required. Contact Deacon Alan for details.
Set Up, Mondays and Tuesdays starting around 9 am
Help set up a handwashing station, arrange some chairs inside the building, move some boxes, and retrieve shopping bags.
Food Prep, Mondays and Tuesdays starting around 9:30 am
Partner with our other kitchen volunteers as directed by our kitchen lead. Activities include washing, chopping and slicing fruits and vegetables, and food production of hot and cold items. No prior cooking experience is needed. You can stay through the entire prep time or leave when you need to.
Prepare items for the encampment locations, Tuesdays
Along with the meals we deliver each week, we include other food items, as well as masks and paper supplies.
Delivery Driver
Drivers come with their own truck or cargo vehicle to pick up the items going to each camp. We have one driver per camp and the typical load includes a box of paper products, a catering box pre-loaded with hotel pans of wrapped prepared foods, milk, juice, masks, and any other items.
Dish Washing and Clean Up, Tuesdays starting around 5:30 pm
We have a commercial dish sanitizer, but kitchen equipment and dishes are washed by hand. All food prep surfaces are cleaned. Final clean up and mopping is done by the church janitor.
Meal Service Host, Tuesdays starting at 5 pm
Staff our offerings tables and keep them looking organized and tidy. Help direct our patrons to social distance and wash their hands before entering. Help keep a count of how many meals are picked up. We pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming.
Tear Down, Tuesdays starting around 6 pm
Help us put everything away including the handwashing station, tables, and chairs. Help dispose of anything left.
